The potential of electric vehicles in Africa
To face climate change in the mobility sector, electric vehicles (EVs) propose a solution for emission free mobility. In the global North, the transition to electromobility is already progressing, however the global south mainly remains on internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). For communities in rural Sub-Saharan Africa there is a lack of mobility and access to electricity. However, solar energy is overabundant and Sub-Saharan Africa is a perfect location for solutions based on photovoltaic technologies.
Our project proposes decentralized solar charging stations combined with electric vehicles as the main driving force for rural mobility in Africa. As part of the project, we aim to identify the locations for a solar charging station with an electric vehicle. Therefore, a remote sensing approach shall be derived and potential locations identified.
- Short literature review about remote sensing methods for identifiction of charging infrastructure
- Derivation of methodology and the relevant parameters (e.g. geopandas, population data, open street map)
- Design of parametric tool with the input of a certain region and the output of how many solar charging stations are needed where
You want to do your thesis in a team of students? That’s how we work. We have weekly meetings, mid-term presentations and team events. You might have the possibility to travel with the team to Ethiopia or South Africa for validating your findings.
